A deliberate 125-line primer: the origin of the name (a cycle of Good-Samaritan folk tales), the full six-member roster with personalities, the Warlocks->Grateful Dead lineage and every keyboard-seat succession (Pigpen, Constanten, the Godchauxs, Brent), the San Francisco sound, the Garcia/Hunter and Weir/Barlow songwriting pairs, the live-band philosophy, two-set structure, the drums/percussion distinction, and the 35 KW sound system. The community's own first attempt to explain itself to outsiders.
Note: This is Part (I), and it is the ONLY extant part. Dunn closes by promising to continue 'in net.music.gdead with more detail,' but an exhaustive four-front hunt (opus Message-ID sequence map, md5-verified-complete UTZOO tape, the full Google Groups 1985 thread index of both groups, and general web) found no Part (II)+ at any fidelity. The continuation was never posted or never propagated/archived. Recorded as a confirmed, documented gap, not an open hunt.
