      "notes": "This is a very special release from Ken and Judy Lee. It serves as a\ncommemoration of Mark Cohens' 2nd anniversary in heaven.\nMark was a great friend, and a big part of the Dead community. And it\nis to him that this project is dedicated, and to whom we owe a huge\ndebt of gratitude. If not for Marks love of music, and love of this\nband in particular, we would never had known about the Lees' Port\nChester archive. Outside of a few other brave souls known to have taped\nshows at this fantastic venue, Ken and Judys' work from the Capitol\nTheatre stands as the ultimate body of documentation. And if not for\nMarks insistance that these shows be \"liberated\", much of what has\npreviously circulated would never had been heard, and this show was one\nof his favorites.\nThis show is a keystone of the Grateful Dead, one of those shows that\nreally makes you wonder, and gives you pause. A show of firsts and\nlasts, and when it was all said and done, had laid to rest some old\nlexicons, and created a whole new set of criteria by which the band\nwould be judged. Truly one of the legendary Grateful Dead shows. The\nDead had a way of continually redefining themselves, in terms of\nperformance, and this show buries the sixties and propels them into the\nseventies. (Much like the benchmark show at Lewiston, Maine 9-6-80\nredifined them for the Eighties)\nThis is the last official acoustic set of the 70's. Besides an improptu\nset in 1978, most of the songs performed acoustically would not see the\nlight of day again untill the fall of 1980, when they were showcased at\nthe 10 night run at the Warfield in San Francisco, and 8 nights at NY's\nRadio City Music Hall. The final \"Operator\", and \"Wake Up Little\nSuzie\", Mystery Train> My Babe (only time played), New Orleans>\nSearchin', Main Ten (last time played), all standout in this\nperformance, and then like a dream, are gone.       "notes": "This does not exist in the vault so this is the best that's out there...\n\nThis was drawn from at least three audience sources, Primarily Ken Lee's (MC>C>D>CD) and Marty Weinberg's (MR>C>D>CD). Some of these sources have been mixed up a bit over the years so I am not too worried about where each minute came from, I just tried to pick the best sounding parts and make them a little better...\n\nAcoustic Set - Primarily Lee's with patches\nNRPS Set - Weinberg's  - No patch source available.\nFirst Electric Disc - Weinberg's with patches.\nSecond Electric Disc - Through Dancin' is Weinberg, rest Lee with patches (The second half of Weinberg had bad bass saturation...)\n\nThis show required a good bit of work. All sources needed a Continuous Noise filter to take the edge off the hiss. Each source was individually equalized to bring out the best in them.  Gain adjustments were made to bring everything in balance and about 200-300 loud handclaps were removed from various parts. A lot of miscellaneous pops and gliches were cleaned up. All patches were matched as best I could to the rest of the songs sonic qualities.  All editing done with Diamond Cut DC5 software.",

      "notes": "The various sources for this composite recording make an accurate genealogy \nimpossible, but the bulk of the recording seems to be MAC>C>D>CD, \nwith a couple of mystery gens in there somewhere. The DAT>CD conversion was\ndone by one Miles Garrett, and CD>SHN by Morgan Evans. Enjoy.\n\nThe following discussion is from deadlists.com. After much listening,\nit appears that our copy is a well-executed composite of 1AUD patched with 2AUD, \nexcept for the last half of Dancin through the end of the show, which is patched with\na higher-gen copy of the last reel of 1AUD:\n*************************************************************************\nSince no SBD survives in the vault of this alltime classic show we are\nespecially lucky that there are three AUD masters in circulation. The best\nmaster as far as sound, reportedly 1AUD was recorded from the balcony. It\nis recognizable by the following defects: it is missing the opening 1:46 of\nMorning Dew, the 1st 9 seconds of Around & Around, 1:02 of jamming in Baby\nBlue starting at 7:37, the first 3 seconds of Truckin, the first couple\nseconds of Dark Star, and 4:19 of jamming from Dancin, starting at 2:06.\nSome copies in circulation patch the beginning of Morning Dew with 2AUD;\nsome patch the middle of Dancin with 2AUD, and of these some return to 1AUD\nfor the last 3:56 of Dancin and others continue with 2AUD through to the end\nof the song. \n\n\nAlso, many circulating tapes that start with 1AUD and patch through to the\nend with 2AUD continue through to the end of the show with 2AUD's version of\nthe concluding sequence, NFA through Good Lovin, despite the fact that\n2AUD's GDTRFB is missing fully 3 minutes of jamming starting at 4:12.\nBesides this cut, which includes the brief Mountain jam, the 2AUD master of\nthis sequence is distinguished by a woman saying \"hey, more\" during the\nopening NFA drums. 2AUD has more audience noise than 1AUD; it was probably\nmade on the floor from some ways back; it is not widely circulated except\nfragmentarily as patches in Dew and Dancin on copies of 1AUD, but the\ncomplete acoustic set and all of the electric set except New Orleans ?\nSearchin and Truckin through Dancin can be found; there is no sign of the\nNRPS set in 2AUD. Clearly on several occasions people have taken partial or\ncomplete versions of 1AUD and 2AUD and assembled various combinations of the\ntwo tapes to make more nearly complete versions of the show -- other\ncombinations besides those noted above. \n\n3AUD has only recently come into circulation. It was made on a Sony\ndictaphone; its sound quality improves as it progresses; probably the mic\nwas moved closer to the PA in the course of the performance. 3AUD contains\nonly the electric set; it is the only master that includes the opening 3\nseconds of Truckin and the first bar of NFA; it is missing 0:47 of Good\nLovin starting 5:40 after drums [4:07]. Most circulating copies of 1AUD\nrequire speed correction, whereas copies of 3AUD are more likely to be good\nspeed. There is also SBD in circulation of the last 5 NRPS tunes, although\nthere is no SBD of the Dead portions of this show in the vault or in\ncirculation. \n**********************************************************************\nmore info:\n\nthe person who is responsible for the bulk of the capitol theatre audience\nrecordings is a fellow by the name of ken lee (not sure of his last name\nspelling). this is the guy who was employed by howard stein (local ny area\npromoter of the time) my source is his brother in law, mark c (a long time\ndead head & quite a nice & unassuming person) i owe mark a huge debt of\ngratitude.\n\nken's port chester masters were recorded on a sony cassette deck (don't have\nthe 'model # or mic info) his positioning was generally center lodge with\nmic's mounted on the rail. 3/21/70 had the mic's spaced at over 15 feet, and\nthe recording bears out that information. 6/24/70 set#2 was mastered on a\n120-minute cassette.\n\nken is reported to be very un-friendly and intimidating (6 foot 5 inches\nwith a security guard attitude) he was at tompkins square park, nyc 6/67\nand reported a ? hour dancin' in the street, fwiw. he recorded many local\nshows (queens college, all 4 stands at port chester, Manhattan center.etc.\nmark says he was doing this only for himself and never did much of anything\nat all with his recordings. at port chester he had howard steins permission\nto tape, with the footnote of never letting them out. so...marks older\nsister is married to this guy & he would occasionally let mark have tapes &\nmark was apparently pretty free with his copies over the years. most of what\ncirculates from gd @ port chester originated mainly from mark's 1st gen\ncopies, not ken's masters. as time went on their relationship deteriorated\n(now they are estranged) and ken literally & figuratively shut the door on\nmark.\n\nmarks last score from ken's tapes was back in 1986. when ken was out, mark &\nan instigating friend went armed with sony tc d5m's and recorded as much\nfrom the masters as they could get away with. ken arrived in the middle of\nall this and was outraged and shut it all down & proceeded to take all the\ncopies (not all it turned out) mark told me that at that point in time, all\nthe tapes he witnessed were badly in need of restoration (and this was back\nin 1986)\n\ni am sad to relay that even though these master still exist, there are\nrotting in un-kind hands it took me close to 2 years & many phone calls to\nhook up with mark, and then only for one day. things were haphazard & i\ntaped what i could given the time i had on hand.\n*************************************************************************\nfor even further discussion of these great tapes see the Taper's Compendium.",

      "notes": "Notes\n\n- I believe that this the first time that a direct transfer from Marty's masters have circulated and it's also the first time that it has been in 24 bit. We all know there are some incomplete songs, some clipped songs and some that just didn't get taped, so as there are already a number of compilations available I decided from the start that I was going to restrict myself to just those songs that were actually taped by Marty. Unfortunately, it's inferrior to the other version.\n__________________________________________________________\n\nUnknown Date/Venue\n\n\nThe highlight of this collection. This is the second early version of Box of Rain. Previously only 9/17/70 was known to be available. This version does not match that one. I've spent a good deal of time trying to match these performances to other known versions with no luck. There is sonic evidence that may indicate that Deep Elem Blues and Box of Rain are from the same performance. As well as To Lay Me Down and Friend of the Devil. Though it's possible it's from one performance as well. I think it's safe to assume it's from 1970 and from New York. As far as I know Jack Toner is only known to have recorded at Fillmore East and The Capitol Theatre. It's possible it's from elsewhere in the region. The fragment of Bluegrass could possibly be from something that was taped over. I almost didn't leave this on here but decided to keep it intact.\n__________________________________________________________\n\nGrateful Dead\nThursday September 19, 1970\nFillmore East\nNew York, NY\n\nThis portion has previously circulated and is what appears to prove that these recordings are from Jack Toner. I used to work with him in Western, MA. He would tell me about seeing the Grateful Dead starting in 1968. I remember he was a big Pigpen fan and the band was never the same after that era to him. I believe he saw them many times between 68-72 but not much afterward. I recall stories of him hanging out with Pigpen and Owsley. I know he saw some classic shows in that era and was likely in attendance for these performances. Back in 2000 he had given me a 1/4\" reel, or maybe multiple reels. I wish I had better recollection. I am nearly certain he said they made by his friend who recorded the shows. The reels were definitely of that era. Back then I found a TEAC A-2300SX to transfer the reels. One recording was clearly Feb 19, 1971 and it was a mono audience recording that appeared to have never circulated. I made that available back then. That is available here https://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-19.aud.Vadnais.30230.flac16 There was some unidentified material as well. This unfortunately sat dormant and mostly forgotten. I do recall him saying he wasn't sure what shows they were but it was acoustic Grateful Dead and some New Riders of the Purple Sage. After stumbling upon this acoustic material in my massive audio archive. I knew it was long overdue to figure out what this was and make it available. I'm not sure if any gurus can elaborate. Please don't alter or repurpose these files without talking to me. I don't know much about Jack Toner. If anyone does I'd be interested to hear. I don't think his tape collection is accounted for. Sure would be nice to find it!",
