"notes": "General Notes:\n\nTwo sources from the LMA provided coverage for this matrix: a relatively \ndecent SBD, and a pretty nice sounding AUD recorded probably at the board \nvia the \"Debbie connection\". The result is an interesting matrix,\nwith the vocals a little hot in the overall outcome - typical of this era's\nSBD mixes, although that's irrelevant when you're deep in the Dark Star.\nOne of the things I like about the resulting matrix is the ability to bring\nback that amphitheater sound. Many people were yipping and whooping in\nbetween songs just to hear their own echo. \n\nCheck out these comments from DeadBase:\n\n\"On Saturday night, one of the crew lit a fireworks fountain up on one of \nthe PA towers creating a moment of panic for some folks who thought it was \nan electrical fire but Garcia calmed 'em down with a simple, 'Don't panic\nfolks, this is the movies - remember..'.\n\n\"In an interesting footnote to these shows, the official Grand Opening of \nthis brand new venue on the Universal Studios backlot was the following\nweekend with a week-long series of Frank Sinatra shows but the Dead gave \nit a real shakedown acid test first.\"\n \nA review from the LLama:\n\n\"The Playin is typically great for 1973, and the Dark Star>Eyes>Stella Blue \ncombination puts this one over the top for me. Very unique jams. And BTW, \nthe Wall of Sound seems to work pretty well tonight. Nice quality. An \noverlooked show that will knock you out!\" - Dr. Flashback\n\nThanks to A. Jerugim for the SBD, and Noah Weiner for the A>D transfer of\nthe AUD as well as all the folks involved with the Audience Devotional Tree.\n\nEnjoy!\nChappy\n\nTimeline/Tracking Notes:\n\nThe transition between all three discs can be put together seemlessly.\nI tracked this show so that disc 3 contains the entire second set.\nIt would be possible to edit out 40 seconds of crowd/tuning from the\nfirst set and burn a 90 minute CDR.\n\nEditing Notes:\n\n- Pitch\nBoth sources were pitched differently, the AUD being the sharpest, \nand the SBD being the flatest. The AUD on average had to be pitched\ndown on average about .05 (5 cents), and the SBD had to be pitched up\nabout .15 (15 cents) to achieve pitch correction - 1.00 being 100 cents \nwhich is a semitone. The result is very close to A=440Hz, however there\nis some fluctuation throughout the show due to the age of the recordings.\n\n- Synch\nEven after pitch correcting the AUD and the SBD, because of the speed \nfluctuation within a given source, multiple edits were performed to keep \nthe sources synched (too many edits to list).\n\n- Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio\nThe AUD did receive a little EQ to revive some of the high end that was lost\nto previously employed NR. The SBD remained untouched sonically. Conceptually, \nall I was trying to do here is to add some dimension to the SBD, which is \npretty dry, by using the ambience of the AUD. The result is a lively but clear \nrecording, hopefully close to how it sounded at the show. If I had to guess \nthe SBD/AUD ratio would be somewhere between 3:1 and 4:1, leaning more towards \nthe 3:1 end of things.\n\n- Edits\nThe following are places where the SBD had holes or incomplete coverage \nin reference to the final matrix timeline. \n\nSBD:\n\nd1t02 (5:16 - 5:27) - missing (crowd)\nd1t04 (7:33 - 7:37) - missing (crowd)\nd1t05 (7:07 - 7:10) - missing (crowd)\nd1t06 (7:43 - 8:57) - missing \nd1t06 (10:03 - 10:07) - missing (crowd)\nd1t07 (5:28 - 5:34) - missing (crowd)\nd1t09 (8:07 - 8:16) - missing (crowd)\nd2t01 (4:47 - 6:12) - missing (crowd)\nd2t02 (0:00 - 0:02) - missing \nd2t02 (4:40 - 4:46) - missing (crowd)\nd2t03 (0:00 - 0:03) - missing \nd2t03 (3:17 - 3:22) - missing (crowd)\nd2t04 (8:53 - 8:59) - missing (crowd)\nd2t05 (14:52 - 14:56) - missing (crowd)\nd3t01 (0:00 - 0:03) - missing \nd3t01 (5:03 - 5:43) - missing (crowd)\nd3t02 (6:13 - 8:13) - missing (crowd)\nd3t03 (4:15 - 4:51) - missing (crowd)\nd3t04>d3t05 (16:16 - 0:07) - missing \nd3t05 (11:39:21 - 11:39:39) - missing\nd3t06 (8:06 - 9:15) - missing (crowd)\nd3t07 (9:04 - 9:13) - missing (crowd)\n\nAUD:\nd1t01 (0:00 - 0:10) - missing \nd1t01 (3:04 - 3:06) - missing (crowd)\nd1t02 (5:27 - 5:32) - missing (crowd)\nd1t06 (10:07 - 10:09) - missing (crowd)\nd2t01 (3:33 - 3:52) - missing \nd2t05 (10:29 - 10:46) - missing \nd3t04 (6:23 - 6:42) - missing\nd3t06 (0:37 - 0:47) - missing\n\n- Recap\nFull coverage was achieved by combining both sources. The most significant\npieces missing from the SBD are 1:14 in the middle of Birdsong, and 20\nseconds of the transition from Dark Star > Eyes, both likely due to reel\nchanges. The rest is tuning/crowd and a few clipped intros. All of it \nis covered nicely by the AUD. The missing elements from the AUD are also\nlikely due to reel changes, and are not that noticeable, although I encourage\nthe avid listener to locate those points so as to hear the matrix coming back\nin - this will reveal the effect of the combination of the two sources.",

"notes": "Alternate copy originating from same original master recording as shnid=6019\n\nEdits:\n*tape cut in Jack Straw cross faded at approximately 3:32\n*tape cut in Playin' cross faded at approximately 10:29\n*tape cut in Dark Star cross faded at approximately 6:45\n*tape cut in Stella Blue cross faded at approximately 0:37\n*end of OMSN patched at 1:51 from shnid=6019\n\nNotes:\nAround August, 2001, when I put a digital copy of this show \n(shnid=6019) into circulation, a trading partner sent me a \nDAT containing a copy sourced off the same AUD master. At \nthe time, this DAT copy's caveats led me to the conclusion \nto only circulate the known first gen reel transfer I \nperformed in 2001.\n\nI recently pulled this DAT out, and upon listening decided it \nwas worth circulating despite some of the tapes issues. Given \nthe spirit and completeness of the online archival community, \nit seemed appropriate to \"add this to the pile\" while I am as \nconfident as I can be that the true master recording is yet to \nbe \"unearthed.\" Whether one deems this an upgrade, downgrade, \nor sidegrade is open to debate. For me, I know that I will \ncontinue to pull this version out when I want to revisit this \npersonal favorite show. That was enough reason for me to risk \n\"polluting the gene pool\" a little bit.\n\nThis is the same master recording as shinid=6019. The tape \nhad all the exact same cuts and flips requiring repair. I \nchose to re-perform the cross fades, rather than introduce \nwhat were, in my opinion, more disruptive SBD patches.\n\nThe Caveats: This entire tape sounds like there was some \nanalog noise reduction applied at some point, followed by the \ntape being run with the Dolby off and on again, perhaps while \ngoing to DAT. That said, this low gen copy has a fantastic \nspectrum of high and low end, beautifully upgrading the one \ndisappointment in the current circulating copy of the same \nrecording - muted high end.\n\nSomeday, when the true master tape itself is found and \ncirculated, this recording will likely claim the crown of \nbeing the best audience tape from 1973.",
