"notes": "Sick Bits Vol. 5\n\nSource:\nMatrix: (SBD/AUD mix)\n\nSBD: MR > DAT > CD-R (shn ID #2595)\n\nAUD: MAC: Sony ECM 33Ps > Sony TC-158 > CDR (shn ID #15208)\nTaped by Jerry Moore\n\n[complete text files for each source appended at end]\n\nTransfer/Editing:\nBoth sources were shn files downloaded from LMA and converted to\nWAV > Vegas 5 (matrix) > WAV > CD Wave > FLAC Frontend > FLAC 16 (level 8)\n\nMatrixed by Chris Chappell\nScarFire@liquidcity.com\n4/23/05\n\nGeneral Notes:\n\nGiven the two sources available on the Llama, I decided to put the effort \ninto editing a matrix of this weird and powerful night at Colgate U. \nduring their homecoming weekend. The Jerry Moore FOB AUD is an excellent \nrecording, and the SBD is balanced with everyone in the mix and Keith \nfeatured prominently throughout. The two sources work well together even \nthough the venue was basically an ice rink with steel walls.\n\nMusic Notes:\n\nThis show, albeit sloppy at points, epitomizes the ability of the band to \ntake chances musically, knowing they can falter at any moment but also\ncollectively discover something around the bend never before seen or heard.\nThis is also reflected in the setlist which has some noteworthy aspects.\nThe Let It Grow to end the first set is both out there and raging, \npurporting what is to come next. Technical difficulties allow time for \nPhil to introduce the band as the \"Jones Gang\" at the start of the second \nset. This level of hilarity is indicative of the playing to follow: loose,\nstrange, daring, and plain old rockin'. Cold Rain & Snow hadn't been \nplayed in over a year and is one of two played in '77. The Playin' in the \nBand is very exploratory building to a crescendo that segues into the gem \nof the show: Eyes of the World - simply the most rockin' I have heard. \nThen, to top it off, they transition into Estimated, with Jerry sort of \nhappening upon the song unexpectedly. This is the first Eyes > Estimated, \nwith another on 11-5-79 and then not again until the famous night at Nassau \nwith Branford Marsalis on 3-29-90. A powerful one-verse only Other One \nfollows, and then the 4th Iko-Iko ever comes out of Drums. The Stella Blue \nis very intimate with Jerry crooning at the end similar to certain nights \nin the 90's. A very long and jammed out Playin' reprise ends the set at\na fervent level, and the Johnny B. Goode to follow doesn't let up.\n \nEditing Notes:\n\n- Pitch\nBoth sources were pitched differently, the AUD being the sharpest, \nand the SBD being the flatest. I used the SBD as my master timeline \nand pitch referenced the AUD to it. The AUD on average had to be pitched\ndown about .33 (33 cents) to achieve pitch correction - 1.00 being \n100 cents which is a semitone. I did not reference A=440 as I did not \ndesire to pitch adjust the SBD. It is very close though to A=440.\n\n- Synch \nBecause of the speed fluctuation within a given source, multiple edits\nwere performed to keep the sources synched. Because the SBD was my\nmaster pitch and time ref, the AUD was synched to the SBD (too many\nedits to list).\n\n- Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio\nThe only dynamic processing I employed was a little bit of limiting \n(Waves L2) to the SBD source. All I was trying to do here is to add some \ndimension to the SBD by using the ambience of the AUD. The result is a \nlively but clear recording, hopefully close to how it sounded at the show. \nIf I had to guess the SBD/AUD ratio would be somewhere between 3:1 and 4:1.\n\n- Edits\nThe following are places where the SBD and AUD had splices, holes or\nincomplete coverage in reference to the final matrix timeline. Crossfades\nwere used throughout for smooth transitions to a single source.\n\nSBD:\nd1t01 (0:00 - 0:03) - missing (crowd)\nd1t02 (6:10 - 6:30) - missing (crowd)\nd1t04 (4:49 - 4:53) - missing (crowd)\nd1t05 (7:23 - 7:25) - missing (crowd)\nd1t06 (4:10 - 4:23) - missing (crowd)\nd1t07 (5:19 - 5:30) - missing (crowd)\nd1t08 (6:09 - 6:13) - missing (crowd)\nd2t01 (0:30 - 1:08) - missing \nd2t03 (6:10 - 8:18) - missing (crowd)\nd3t01 (",

"notes": "*The NEW track (d2T01.NEW) contains a patch for the famous \"Jones Gang\" introduction to set 2. This has been patched to contain the complete intro from a quite good audience tape (AUD: MR> C> C -- not a completely reliable sourcing, but close enough for its purpose here). The crowd is prominent, and the AUD is fun because they're absolutely nuts. In fact, the whole show circulates in AUD and it's recommended.\n\nThere are two .md5 files for d2. The first (gd77-11-04d2.md5) contains the original tracks. The second .md5 file (gd77-11-04d2NEW.md5) contains checksum information for the new track ONLY. You should when burning choose either d2t01.shn (no patch) OR d2t01.NEW.shn (with AUD patch), but not both.\n\nNew track seeded by braverman@earthlink.net, 2/01.\nOther tracks seeded but not accompanied by text file, so source information is missing; sorry.\n\npb\n\n\n--------------\n\nThe following was posted by the Undernet sometime after the initial seeding. \nbraverman@earthlink.net wholeheartedly concurs, but suggests respectfully that the authors read more widely than middle-period Hunter Thompson.\n\ngd77-11-04 - Jones Gang@Colgate University Homecoming \n\nThis seed slipped into the 'tree under the radar from the alt.dead crew last month without the fanfare this Royal Assblaster deserves. The crazily fast, tight mania that crackles off of this show will leave you breathless and exhausted after a full listen. \n\nA good show to compare this to would be 77.05.04. While both shows exhibit the signature '77 hyperdelic cocaine soundstamp -- 05.04 is a nice moonlit, redwine convertible ride compared to the violent psychic enema the Dead gave these undergraduates that magical night at Colgate. The blistering solos during this Eyes of the World alone will make every effort to toss you bodily over The Cliff. \n\nThis one will clean the tubes right out -- never mind the initial pressure behind the eyes and those leering insectoid midgets as the skein of space/time unravels, just hang ON to your faces, loyal SHNarvesters, this is some ride...",

"notes": "Some Comments:\n\nMy CD copy of this show has always been a real favorite. Nice clear sound, great song list. The real break between sets is after Let It Grow, as BW announces (“so hang out”). Set 2 starts with Something Doesn’t Work… But if recording to CD by sets, the second set will not fit on a single CD (>90 min.). As dl’ed if desired to do so will fit nicely on two CD’s. CDa is separate songs, CDb jams with real intensity and fire for the most part, (Playin’>>>Other One), slowing for a real nice Stella. Garcia’s guitar sound is harder than in previous years, and everyone goes into jams with a real intensity (turn it up!). Dead on a real roll in 1977. Very nearly forty years and still raises the shivers.\n\nDr. Flashback said in 2004: “Guaranteed to bring a smile and get you kind!”",

Very nearly forty years and still raises the shivers.\n\nThis show dl from the band’s server before the rule change in 2002 which resulted in policy allowing only AUD dl’s of Dead concerts. Before that, it was allowed to freely dl SBD shows. I left the show the way I found it, I was careful not to do anything to harm this recording.\n\ncontrast clause: another source of this show exists- 77-11-04.02595.sbd.unknown.sbeok.flac16.torrent. Upped Aug 2012, inactive w/ last post Jul 2014. Present file has lineage to identified SBD.",
