The literal first post in net.gdead - and it is a tape-swap post. Live-tape trading culture is present at the genesis, a direct throughline to the later dat-heads / taper corpus.

The Berkeley tie, at genesis
An early net.gdead poster from ucbvax (UC Berkeley) asking why the group is empty with 'good stuff happening right here in Berkeley next month' - the Berkeley scene present in the group's earliest days, foreshadowing the later gdead.berkeley.edu mailing-list lineage.

Early identity-forming post
'glad to see that the Dead already have a newsgroup of their own... Even in this silent media the Dead live.' The community naming itself into existence.

The first firsthand show trip report
The first firsthand Grateful Dead show testimony on the net: a trip report from Veneta, OR (the Ken Kesey / Springfield Creamery 'Field Trip' show, with Mountain Girl, Wavy Gravy, and a surprise Peter Rowan sit-in) and Seattle. The author notes he is 'not sure if net.gdead is a real group or not' - capturing the exact moment before the community had a stable home. This is the archetype of the show-testimony that the entire LSC corroboration layer is built to surface.

The call for votes that began the group's creation
Dick Dunn's mail-in call for votes on whether to split a Grateful Dead subgroup off net.music - the democratic antecedent to the creation charter (artifact 5). The sign-off quotes Robert Hunter's St. Stephen ('If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind'). The community deciding, by ballot, to build itself a home.

The vote that created net.music.gdead (47 yes / 10 no)
Dunn's tally (47 yes / 10 no) and synopsis of the mail-in poll, two days before he created the group. This is the referendum the charter refers to ('the response to the poll of the past couple of weeks seems to warrant a subgroup'). It captures the entire founding debate: the 'why not just a mailing list' alternative, the administrative + esthetic 'no' case (fear of subgroup proliferation, fear the DeadHeads would vanish from net.music), and the central 'What's so special about the Grateful Dead?' question - to which Dunn offers that one's answer 'probably defines whether one be D'Head.' The democratic origin document of the community.

The formal creation announcement of net.music.gdead
The founding charter of net.music.gdead - the direct ancestor of rec.music.gdead after the Great Renaming. Xref shows net.music.gdead:1 (the very first article in the new group). Dunn lays out the group's purpose (songlists, tour schedules, rumors, song evolution, band notes, trivia), the tape-trading etiquette (non-commercial swaps only), the copyright caution on lyrics, and the 'use it or lose it' premise. This is the literal constitution of the community LSC is built on.

The promised newcomer primer (Part I)
The introductory article Dunn promised in the creation charter (artifact 5), posted to the PARENT net.music group ('for those of you in net.music') 12 days after the Welcome. A deliberate 125-line primer: the origin of the name (a cycle of Good-Samaritan folk tales), the full six-member roster with personalities, the Warlocks->Grateful Dead lineage and every keyboard-seat succession (Pigpen, Constanten, the Godchauxs, Brent), the San Francisco sound, the Garcia/Hunter and Weir/Barlow songwriting pairs, the live-band philosophy, two-set structure, the drums/percussion distinction, and the 35 KW sound system. The community's own first attempt to explain itself to outsiders.
